Lately, we’ve been seeing a lot of western influences in fashion. I first saw this trend on Rihanna (a fashion icon) in 2016 when she wore Manolo Blahnik ‘Desert Denim’ boots that totally resemble assless chaps. This trend has now made its mark in modern fashion. As I look at fashion moments from Coachella 2018, I notice that assless chaps have also made their appearance there, along with sparkly cowboy boots and saddle bags. This is no coincidence. Rewind to Fall 2017, we see many western styles invade the runways from New York to Paris. Tom Ford, Versace, Calvin Klein, and Chloé all had western influences in the looks they presented on the runway. Victoria’s Secret also had a western-themed campaign for their holiday collection that year.

Here’s how I incorporated this trend into my personal style.

This black brimmed hat from DollsKill has been a favorite of mine this month. It goes well with most of my outfits and totally helps elevate every look. Black brimmed hats are timelessly chic. I’m wearing a beige Saint Laurent button-up with a sharp 1970’s collar that is slightly oversize so it looks very casual. I left three of the buttons unfastened to show off a bit of clavicle because who doesn’t love a little clavicle cleavage? On the bottom, I’m wearing a pair of drawstring tapered grid joggers from Topman. I love these pants because you can dress ‘em up or dress ‘em down depending on your mood. Overall, I think I achieved a “western-esque” aesthetic without looking like I’m about to go wrangle some cows on my farm. I could have gone full WestWorld by throwing on my leather jacket and switch out the strap sandals (Terry by Dr Marten) for a pair of black Chelsea boots.

How to take on this western trend?

I know some of you may be afraid to try out this trend because it could take you out of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid. Fashion is about having fun. There are ways to incorporate this trend to your personal style without looking like Jessie from Toy Story. Look for 1970’s sharp collar shirts and leather jackets with a bit of studded detail. You can accessorize with a pair of silver concho earrings and a saddle bag, which is very on trend this season. Also, invest in chic leather studded/buckle boots. Remember to edit yourself. In this case, less is more.
